Getting People On Board Begins With You
7/01/02
Is it possible for a congregation to change and to be transformed? Only through God's Spirit and by your leadership. On a practical level, here are important questions to ask and answer to further the process of change in the church you serve that will lead towards transformation:
1. Are you convinced God wants to transform you and those you serve?
Be rock-solid if you answer yes. Now is not the time to adopt someone else's conviction. Do you believe God has brought you to this place to serve Jesus Christ in the process of transformation? Only an absolute "yes" will give you staying power.
2. Are you committed to the process of transformation? If so, pray for it daily.
Read about the process of change. It takes leadership. That means you. Lyle Schaller's book, "The Change Agent" continues to be very helpful. Read business books on leadership and change. Formulate and pray through a long-term strategy, including how to make it last.
3. How will you incarnate God's vision for transformation?
What crisis, discontent, opportunity will open the perception for the need to change?
"Rub raw the sores of discontent" (Saul Alinski)
Watch what kind of language you use. (positive)
Where can you use The Jesus Connection?
Tie-in your vision with strands of the congregation's history and values.
4. Where do you see "Islands of Opportunity and Hope" (Bob Slocum)
Who would be receptive to your vision? What strategy have you developed to influence receptive individuals and groups that genuinely meets their needs (not yours)
5. How can you build an initiating group?
An initiating group is the "early adapter" group that will help lead the process of change. This must be a group effort, not a solo flight.
6. How can you build a support group?
A support group is a wider circle than the initiating group that will support, carry through and legitimatize the change.
7. Encourage "mini-transformations" that can come more quickly.
Let them come to the top of the mountain and see over into the Promised Land. Work on ways the congregation can taste what a transformed people and congregation could actually be like. Perhaps some will find their spiritual gifts, passion and style and experience the difference. Lead others on a prayer retreat such occurred with you. Interview people in worship who have an exciting discovery to share.
8. How will you implement the changes and incorporate them into the on-going life - blood of the church?
